Validation of the added mass effect in the narrow gaps of nuclear reactor pressure vessels

Nuclear reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) must be robust to external environmental excitations such as seismic loads. Precise numerical models that predict the dynamic responses to external loads are crucial for evaluating the safety of RPVs. Notably, in RPVs submerged in reactor coolant, it is necessary to examine the added mass effect of the fluid via fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis, employing either an analytical approach or a numerical analysis. The present study focuses on modeling and analyzing the added mass effect in the narrow gaps associated with the dense structural layout in the reactor. In this context, this paper validates analytical and numerical models that accurately describe the added mass effect for two cases: (i) simple concentric cylinders with a narrow gap filled with fluid and (ii) a complex small-scale RPV with narrow gaps also filled with fluid. Initially, the analytical model, employing Lagrange's equation of motion and velocity potential, and the numerical model, utilizing FE modeling in acoustic FSI through ANSYS, were validated through experimental modal testing for the added mass effect in the narrow gap between simple concentric cylinders. The analytical model for the concentric cylinders indicates that the added mass diverges to infinity as the gap approaches zero, which should be examined carefully. Through experiments for the concentric cylinders, the analytical and FEM-based added mass effects were validated with a natural frequency error of 3 %. Subsequently, based on the results for the concentric cylinders, a complex numerical model of the small-scale reactor with complex boundary conditions was developed and cross-validated through corresponding experimental modal testing of the small-scale RPV. The added mass model for the narrow gaps in the RPV was validated by substantial agreement of eight representative modes, as demonstrated by a 5 % natural frequency error.

Quantitative Assessment of Traumatic Brain Injury Risk in Diverse Age Groups of Females: Insights from Computational Biomechanics

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) stands as a multifaceted health concern, exhibiting varying influences across human population. This study delves into the biomechanical complexities of TBI within gender-specific contexts, focusing on females. Our primary objective is to investigate distinctive injury mechanisms and risks associated with females, emphasizing the imperative for tailored investigations within this cohort.By employing Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) Analysis, we conducted simulations to quantify biomechanical responses to traumatic forces across diverse age groups of females. The study utilized a scaling technique to create finite element models (FEMs). The young female FEM, based on anthropometric data, showcased a 15% smaller head geometry compared to the young male FEM. Moreover, while the elderly female FEM closely mirrored the young female FEM in most structural aspects, it showed distinctive features such as brain atrophy and increased cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) layer thickness. Notably, the child female FEM (ages 7–11 years) replicated around 95% of the young female FEM's geometry. These structural distinctions meticulously captured age-specific variations across our modeled female age groups. It's noteworthy that identical conditions, encompassing impact intensity, loading type, and boundary conditions, were maintained across all FEMs in this biomechanical finite element analysis, ensuring comparative results.The findings unveiled significant variations in frontal and occipital pressures among diverse age groups, highlighting potential age-related discrepancies in TBI susceptibility among females. These variations were primarily linked to differences in anatomical features, including brain volume, CSF thickness, and brain condition, as the same material properties were used in the FEMs. These results were approximately 4.70, 6.33 and 6.43% in frontal area of brain in diverse age groups of females (young, elderly, and child) respectively compared to young male FEM. Comparing the FEM results between the young female and the elderly female, we observed a decrease in occipital brain pressure at the same point, reducing from 171,993 to 167,793 Pa, marking an approximate 2.5% decrease. While typically the elderly exhibit greater brain vulnerability compared to the young, our findings showcase a reduction in brain pressure. Notably, upon assessing the relative movement between the brain and the skull at the point located in occipital area, we observed greater relative movement in the elderly (1.8 mm) compared to the young female (1.04 mm). Therefore, brain atrophy increases the range of motion of the brain within the cranial space. The study underscores the critical necessity for nuanced TBI risk assessment tailored to age and gender, emphasizing the importance of age-specific protective strategies in managing TBIs across diverse demographics. Future research employing individual modeling techniques and exploring a wider age spectrum holds promise in refining our understanding of TBI mechanisms and adopting targeted approaches to mitigate TBI in diverse groups.

A comparative study of two fish farm layouts under pure current conditions

High-value finfish, such as the Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar), are typically raised in multi-cage fish farms. The fish farm needs to be designed with sufficient strength and water exchange. A coupling algorithm between two open-source numerical toolboxes, OpenFOAM and Code_Aster, is utilized in this work for fluid-structure interaction analysis of fish farms. The two different fish farm layouts, i.e., the 2 × 3 array layout and the Honeycomb layout, are investigated in this study under pure current conditions with different flow angles. The fluid and structure responses of the two fish farm layouts are compared, in terms of flow field in and around fish farms, tensions in anchor lines, drag force, and total cultivation volume. The present results suggest that, compared to the 2 × 3 array layout, the Honeycomb layout has a smaller covered area and reduced environmental loads, which are making this layout advantageous for fish farming.

Enhancing Axial Flow Fan Performance in Air-Cooled Condensers: Tip Vortex Manipulators and Comparative Analysis of Numerical Simulation and Experimental Testing

Abstract Direct dry-cooled power plants typically operate numerous large-diameter axial flow fans in air-cooled condensers (ACCs) to facilitate the condensation of steam in the plant's thermodynamic cycle. Enhanced fan efficiency may, at scale, lead to significant parasitic power reductions and subsequent increases in plant power output. The performance of these fans may be increased by adding blade-tip modifications, which act to control blade-tip leakage flow. Previous studies have shown that manipulating the tip leakage vortex (TLV) increases the blade-to-air momentum transfer and stabilizes the air flow structures as it traverses the fan blade. This paper takes a step toward the development of improved tip vortex manipulators for an ACC fan. Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, and experimental testing of the modified and unmodified fan within an ISO test facility are performed. The results are then utilized to assess the accuracy of the simulation model, visualize the manipulated flow structures at the blade tip, and ultimately quantify the effect of the endplate designs on fan performance. Excellent correlation between numerical and test results for the unmodified fan is observed, and the benefit of blade-tip modification on fan performance is again confirmed experimentally. The simulation model, however, fails to predict improvements in fan performance under modification, and simulated tip leakage flows are investigated for clarification. It is hypothesized that deflection of tip endplates under operation account for differences between simulation and experiment, and that fluid–structure interaction analyses could potentially resolve discrepancies.

Nonlinear biomechanics of diseased carotid arteries

The aim of this article is to analyse the nonlinear biomechanics of diseased carotid arteries as a potential tool for predicting the onset of cerebral strokes. A two-way coupled three-dimensional (3D) hyperelastic fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis of a diseased carotid artery with abnormal luminal projections at the carotid bulb known as carotid web (CaW) is conducted on the geometry of a patient artery, built upon employing CT angiography images. The blood-flow model incorporates non-Newtonian pulsatile turbulent fluid, and the artery wall is considered hyperelastic subject to blood-induced motion. The hemodynamics of artery induced by transient boundary conditions is determined, specifically focusing on shifts in crucial hemodynamic parameters such as wall shear stress (WSS) and alterations in the blood velocity pattern. Structural assessment of the artery wall involves quantifying the von Mises (VM) stress and deformation field. The analysis demonstrates that different CaW models result in different flow patterns for a selection of time steps in a cardiac cycle. The findings reveal that the presence of the web, as the most common disease among younger adults, can significantly influence the hemodynamic parameters and potentially accelerate the formation of thrombus and atherosclerosis. Hemodynamic analysis can potentially predict specific sites prone to plaque formation and rupture within the carotid artery.

Aerodynamic performance of a flyable flapping wing rotor with dragonfly-like flexible wings

Drawing inspiration from insect flapping wings, a Flapping Wing Rotor (FWR) has been developed for Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV) applications. The FWR features unique active flapping and passive rotary kinematics of motion to achieve a high lift coefficient and flight efficiency. This study thoroughly investigates the aerodynamic performance and design of a bio-inspired flexible wing for FWR-MAVs, emphasizing its novel backward-curved wingtip and variable spanwise stiffness resembling a dragonfly's wing. The research departs from previous aerodynamic studies of FWR, which focused predominantly on rectangular and rigid wings, and delves into wing flexibility. Employing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Computational Structural Dynamics (CSD), and experimental measurements, the study demonstrates the aerodynamic benefits of the dragonfly-inspired FWR wingtip shape and its reinforced structure. Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) analysis is used to examine the effects of elastic deformation encompassing twist and bending on aerodynamic forces. The results underscore the importance of bending deformation in enhancing lift and power efficiency and propose a method for analysing variable stiffness along the wingspan using a vortex delay mechanism that is induced by delayed flapping motion. By comparing modelled and measured stiffness, the study validates the flexibility of the FWR wing, revealing optimal aerodynamic efficiency is achieved through moderate flexibility and spanwise stiffness variation. The curving leading-edge beam forming the sweep-back wingtip offers a practical approach to obtaining variable stiffness and aerodynamic benefits for FWR-MAVs. Using the same pair of dragonfly-like flexible wings, FWR-MAVs have effectively exhibited VTOL and hovering flight capabilities, spanning from a 25-g single-motor drive model to a 51-g dual-motor drive model. This research provides valuable insights into flexible wing design for FWR-MAVs, leveraging biomimicry to improve flight efficiency.

Stability Evaluation of a Simplified Reclaimer Using Fluid–Structure Interaction

This paper describes the numerical modeling and simulation of the wind effects on an ore reclaimer structure using analytical and numerical methods. The physical model is a large machine with a height of 34 m and a width of 77 m, and due to its complexity, a simplified model was used. This study aims to investigate the influence of wind speed on the stability failure of the reclaimer and to provide a more efficient and precise stopping criterion. The simulations were performed using a two-way FSI (fluid–structure interaction) approach. An FSI analysis was performed to study the dynamic behavior of a numerical model consisting of two separate parts with contact constraints. This article also highlights the importance of FSI in improving the reliability of the stability failure. Finally, the numerical results showed differences compared to the analytical model, and the wind load limit to stability failure was observed at higher wind speeds. The structure was able to support wind velocities higher than suggested by the FEM (European Materials Handling Federation) standard without stability fails.

Seismic responses of a fuel assembly in nuclear heating reactor

The fuel assembly (FA) stands as a pivotal component within nuclear reactors, impacting safety, reliability, and economic viability of the entire facility. In the 200 MW nuclear heating reactor (NHR200-II), the FA embodies a novel structural configuration, characterized by a 9 × 9 fuel bundle arrangement enclosed within a singular channel. During seismic events, challenges like potential FA damage and control rod insertion failures can pose safety risks. Therefore, a comprehensive structural integrity assessment is essential. The seismic responses of the NHR200-II FA unidirectionally and bidirectionally under different boundary conditions, using a time-compressed El-Centro N-S earthquake (1.5 times amplification, ∼0.36 g peak acceleration), are analyzed in detail. We examine stress distribution, channel-spacer grid interactions, dynamic clamping, acceleration responses, and response spectra. Results confirm the robust seismic performance of NHR200-II FA, with potential for future seismic fluid–structure interaction analysis based on the model used in this work.

Helicopter main rotor FSI analysis using parametric blade model as an application for multidisciplinary optimization

This work is part of a research program aimed at finding new approaches and design solutions for helicopter main rotor modelling using multidisciplinary optimization. It is the fourth stage of an individual research program that includes preliminary tasks such as parametric modelling of a single blade, CFD modelling of a full main rotor for different flight conditions, and preliminary structural modelling of a blade. The main goal of this work is to present the parametric modelling of the rotor blade body and structure as an application for complex simulation. The paper demonstrates the method of advanced analysis of the entire rotor and provides exemplary results obtained from complicated analyses. The analytical foundation for combined fluid-structure analysis is presented. The parametric design method is shown to be applicable for different blade planform shapes and various section airfoils. The blade CFD fluid domain is also prepared using the parametric method, as well as the blade’s inner structure. The simulation parameters from the previous stages of research, which serve as inputs to the FSI analysis, are outlined. These previously obtained parameters are combined and introduced into an FSI simulation to assess their compatibility and applicability. The configuration procedure of the analysis and the boundary conditions are presented. The obtained numerical results are then compared with analytical assumptions. The simulation products, which serve as inputs for further analysis, are presented with graphical representations. The time and memory consumption of the simulation are outlined. The application of the described work in an optimization loop is proposed. As a result of this research, new options for main rotor optimization are developed. The paper demonstrates some crucial possibilities of FSI analysis in the described simulation cases. The use of combined parametric modeling with fluid-structure interaction analysis for different flight conditions is presented as a new perspective for multidisciplinary design optimization of a helicopter rotor system.

Response of flexible structures to air-blast: nonlinear compressibility effects in fluid–structure interaction

This paper presents a coupled model that considers the nonlinear compressibility effect in fluid–structure interaction (FSI) during air-blast loading on flexible structures. In this coupled model, structural behaviour is idealized as a linear single-degree-of-freedom mass-spring-damper system whereas nonlinear fluid compressibility is considered by applying Rankine–Hugoniot jump conditions across a moving plate. The surrounding fluid medium is modelled with an ideal gas equation and hence, this model can be applied for FSI analysis with relatively strong shocks (reflection coefficient of up to 8). The nonlinear compressibility of the fluid medium at the backside of the plate is also considered in this coupled formulation and its effects on the structural responses are examined. Moreover, the negative/underpressure phase of the reflected wave profile, which is typically neglected in a decoupled model, is also considered in the proposed model and its influence on the structural response is also investigated. The study reveals that the nonlinear compressibility of fluid medium significantly influences the coupled FSI phenomena, especially in flexible lightweight structures. Numerical examples are presented to highlight the implications of the nonlinear compressibility effect in FSI on the reflected pressure profile and the response of flexible structures. Parametric dependencies of response on structural mass and natural frequency are examined thoroughly and a response spectrum is obtained. It is envisaged that the lightweight protective structure design under higher blast intensity may benefit from this study.

Investigation on form-preserving polishing of side-wall surfaces via an active fluid jet.

In recent years, extensive research and development have been conducted on an active fluid jet (AFJ) polishing-based post-polishing process aimed at removing periodic marks from diamond-turned surfaces. This cost-effective method demonstrates its machining capability across a wide range of materials. Notably, it excels in preserving the form accuracy during the post-polishing process for traditional optics, allowing for the attainment of high-precision shape and an ultra-smooth texture. However, the challenge arises when attempting to maintain form preservation on diamond-cut surfaces located on the side-walls of structures due to non-uniform material removal. This limitation significantly restricts its application in advanced opto-mechanical systems, including monolithic multi-surface workpieces. Therefore, this paper systematically investigates the form-preserving capability of AFJ polishing for side-wall surfaces through multi-scale analysis. The micromachining characteristics of the diamond-cut surface are elaborated upon using elastic-plastic theory, and the impact of polishing parameters on form preservation is studied at the microscopic scale. Furthermore, at the macroscopic scale, a simulation model of the AFJ polishing process is established based on fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis and rigid dynamic analysis. To validate the proposed theory, a series of tests are conducted. Theoretical and experimental results indicate that non-uniform material removal occurs in the contact area between the tool and the workpiece due to the influence of gravity, thereby hindering the form-preservation polishing process. Building upon the simulation model, a new AFJ tool is designed and optimized to enhance the form-preserving capability of AFJ post-polishing for side-wall surfaces. Experimental results confirm that the innovative AFJ tool uniformly eliminates the periodic marks on diamond-cut surfaces. The theory and methodology presented in this work have broad applicability to various form-preservation post-polishing processes on diamond-cut surfaces.

Influence of Unbalance and Differential Pressure On the Stability of Vertical Rotor-seal System

Abstract The rotordynamic (RD) fluid force generated in fluid elements such as seals in turbomachinery affects the stability of turbomachinery and causes shaft vibrations. Various studies have been conducted to clarify the effects of seals on the stability of rotor systems. Many studies have investigated the rotor dynamics of horizontal shaft systems, considering the RD fluid force generated in the seals, and in these studies, the stability of horizontal shaft systems has been assessed via eigenvalue analysis using RD coefficients. However, few studies have analyzed vertical shaft systems. The dynamic behavior of vertical shafts differs significantly from that of horizontal shafts because the weight of the rotor does not act on the seal in a vertical shaft system. Vertical shaft systems are generally prone to instability because of the fluid film whirl, and the amplitude of the shaft whirl tends to be large. When the amplitude is large, the RD fluid force cannot be linearized around the equilibrium point using RD coefficients. Therefore, destabilization and stabilization phenomena that appear in vertical shaft systems cannot be predicted using eigenvalue analysis. Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis that considers the interaction between the shaft vibration and the RD fluid force generated in seals is required to predict such phenomena. This study used FSI analysis to investigate the effects of unbalance and differential pressure on the stability of a vertical shaft system subjected to RD fluid force generated in the seal.

Fluid-structure interaction analysis of the thromboembolic risk in the left atrial appendage under atrial fibrillation: Effect of hemodynamics and morphological features

BackgroundComplications of atrial fibrillation (AF) include ischemic events originating within the left atrial appendage (LAA), a protrusion of the left atrium with variable morphological characteristics. The role of the patient specific morphology and pathological haemodynamics on the risk of ischemia remains unclear. MethodsThis work performs a comparative assessment of the hemodynamic parameters among patient-specific LAA morphologies through fluid-structure interaction computational analyses. Three LAA models per each of the four commons patient-specific morphological families (chicken wing, cactus, windsock, and cauliflower) were analysed. Mechanical properties of the tissue were based on experimental uniaxial tests on a young pig's heart. Boundary conditions were imposed based on clinical assessments of filling and emptying volumes. Sinus rhythm and atrial fibrillation operative conditions were simulated and analysed. ResultsFor each model, the effect of morphological and functional parameters, such as the number of trabeculae and LAA stroke volume, over the hemodynamics established into the appendage was analysed. Comparison between results obtained in healthy and diseased conditions suggested the introduction of a new parameter to quantify the risk of thrombosis, here called blood stasis factor (BSF). This is defined as the LAA surface area which permanently experiences levels of shear strain rate inferior to a threshold value, set to 5 s−1 (BSF5). ConclusionsThis work suggests that the current morphological classification is unsuitable to evaluate the probability of thrombus formation. However, hemodynamic parameters easy to determine from clinical examinations, such as normalised stroke volume, LAA orifice flow rate and presence of extensive trabeculations can identify departures from healthy hemodynamics in AF and support a more systematic stratification of the thromboembolic risk.

Investigation on the performance of a torque-driven undulatory swimmer with distributed flexibility

The locomotion of fish provides insight for the design of efficient swimming robotic devices. The current study presents a systematic investigation of the locomotion performance of a fish-like swimmer with a wide range of parameter settings. Two-dimensional simulations with the immersed boundary method in the framework of Navier–Stokes equations are employed for the fluid–structure interaction analysis. Unlike most previous studies where the kinematics of the swimmer is predetermined, the locomotion of the current swimmer is the response of a single periodic torque applied to the anterior part. In addition, current simulations applied a direct correspondence between code units and real-world units, providing more engineering-related guidance for the future design of microrobotic swimmers. The effect of the distribution of body stiffness on swimming performance and propulsion generation is discussed with different pitch frequencies and amplitudes. It was shown that swimmers with a more flexible posterior part have an advantage in undulatory swimming performance when the pitch angle is low or moderate. However, such an advantage disappears when the pitch angle or actuating frequency exceed a certain level. An analysis of the phase-averaged vorticity field and thrust sequence is given to clarify the change in performance due to the variation of flexibility.

Whole-heart modelling with valves in a fluid–structure interaction framework

Computational modelling of whole-heart function is a useful tool to study heart mechanics and haemodynamics. Many existing heart models focus on electromechanical aspect without considering physiological valves and use simplified fluid models instead. In this study we develop a four-chamber heart model featuring realistic chamber geometry, detailed valve modelling, hyperelasticity with fibre architecture and fluid–structure interaction analysis. Our model is used to investigate heart behaviours with different modelling assumptions including restricted/free valve annular dynamics, and with/without heart-pericardium interactions. Our simulation results capture the interactions between valve leaflet and surrounding flow, typical left ventricular flow vortices, typical venous and transvalvular flow waveform, and physiological heart deformations such as atrioventricular plane movement. The improvement of ventricular filling and atrial emptying at early diastole is evident with free annulus. In addition, we find that the added pericardial forces on the heart have a predominant effect on atrial wall deformation especially during atrial contraction, and further help with the atrial filling process. Most importantly, the current study provides a framework for comprehensive multi-physics whole-heart modelling considering all heart valves and fluid–structure interactions.

Numerical analysis of inflow turbulence intensity impact on the stress and fatigue life of vertical axis hydrokinetic turbine

The present study aims to analyze the effect of upstream turbulence intensity on the hydrodynamic and structural performance of the straight-blade vertical axis turbine. To achieve this, a one-way fluid structure interaction analysis is conducted within the ANSYS workbench environment. Initially, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is performed at different values of upstream velocity values. Additionally, the impact of upstream turbulence intensity is also analyzed. The CFD simulation results were validated against published experimental work. Once CFD simulation is performed then computed fluid loads are transferred to the ANSYS mechanical structural module. Finite element modeling is performed to compute the stresses and the fatigue life. The study reveals that increasing the upstream turbulence intensity from 5% to 20% leads to 8.6% improvement in the turbine's power performance. However, turbulence intensity also results in 35.6% increase in Von-Mises stresses produced within the designed turbine. However, even with this increase, the Von-Mises stresses remain below a critical threshold, measuring at 173.34 MPa when the upstream water velocity is 1.4 m/s, and the inflow turbulence intensity is at 20%. This stress level is well within the material's yield strength, ensuring the turbine's structural integrity. Moreover, the simulation results emphasize that turbulence intensity has a significant impact on the turbine's fatigue life. Further, it is predicted that an increase in turbulence intensity from 5% to 20% leads to a significant 40% reduction in the turbine's fatigue life. The stress analysis results reveal that struts, strut–blade joints, and strut–shaft joints are the key stress concentration areas. The results suggested that an increase in upstream turbulence intensity has favorable impact on turbine performance, however, for highly turbulent flows turbine should have higher strength and key areas should be focused on designing turbine for such flow conditions.

Two-way coupling fluid–structure interaction analysis on dynamic response of offshore wind turbine

The monopile-supported offshore wind turbines (OWTs) are subjected to the wave and current loadings. Affected by currents and waves, monopile-supported OWTs are also vulnerable to scour. However, the effect of scour and currents on the dynamic behavior of the monopile are not fully appreciated. This study conducted the model tests to evaluate the effect of scour depth and flow velocity on the lateral responses of support structure. Furthermore, the two-way (T-W) coupling fluid–structure interaction (FSI) method was proposed to evaluate the dynamic responses of piles in sand. The support structure is modeled using ABAQUS, a finite-element models software package, by considering the nonlinear soil–structure interaction effects, STAR-CCM + tools has been employed to model the FSI which are fed into ABAQUS to predict the structure’s dynamic response. Using the proposed method, a parametric study has been conducted to evaluate the effects of scour depths, flow velocities on the dynamic responses of OWTs. The results indicate that scour altered the fundamental frequency of OWT, causing resonance. An increase in scour depth and flow velocity increased the dynamic responses of support structure, which are detrimental for the safety and stability of the OWT system.

Fluid-structure interaction analysis of wind turbine aerodynamic loads and aeroelastic responses considering blade and tower flexibility

With the increasing size of wind turbines, the aeroelastic phenomenon plays an essential role in the safety of wind turbines. A fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis for wind turbine by integrating the LES turbulent model and a structural dynamic model is carried out to investigate the aerodynamic loads and aeroelastic responses considering different inflow conditions, and blade and tower flexibility. For the first time, the time series and statistical features of aerodynamic loads, the exceedance probability, the equivalent fatigue loads, and the time series and statistical features of aeroelastic responses of wind turbine are calculated by the two-way FSI model. Furthermore, effects of inflow wind conditions and the blade and tower flexibility are investigated. It is noted that the turbulent winds result in increased fluctuations of aerodynamic loads and the equivalent fatigue load. The flap-wise motions of blades are more critical to load magnitude than the edgewise motions, and the inclusion of tower motion mitigates this aerodynamic load due to the coupling effects. Finally, it is also observed that the tower motion has a noticeable impact on the flap-wise displacement at the blade tip, and the flap-wise motions of blades significantly affect the fore-aft displacement at the tower top.

Semi-analytical dynamic modeling and fluid-structure interaction analysis of L-shaped pipeline

The traditional semi-analytic modeling is mainly aimed at the straight pipeline with simple boundary conditions. In contrast, the actual aero-engine pipeline needs to consider the effects of complex configuration, boundary and multiple clamps, so proposing an improved semi-analytic method to model an arbitrary fluid-conveying L-shaped pipeline is challenging. Based on the Hamiltonian principle, the differential equations of the L-shaped pipeline are derived. Then, the modal shape functions are determined under the conditions that the elastic support points and the joints of the straight pipeline and the curved pipeline meet the deformation coordination requirements. The proposed semi-analytical model is verified by comparing the natural frequencies and mode shapes obtained from the finite element method using ANSYS and experiment; the error of each order natural frequency is less than 5 %. In addition, the model is verified under various working conditions: different center angle and boundary conditions (clamp position and pipeline end constraints). The effects of the fluid velocity and pressure on the natural characteristics of the L-shaped pipeline are also analyzed. The results show that under the critical pressure of 60.51 MPa and the critical velocity of 247 m/s, the natural frequency decreases with the increase of fluid velocity and pressure. The proposed method can provide theoretical support for efficient and accurate modeling of complex spatial pipeline systems.

Effect of Sinotubular Junction Size on TAVR Leaflet Thrombosis: A Fluid-Structure Interaction Analysis.

TAVR has emerged as a standard approach for treating severe aortic stenosis patients. However, it is associated with several clinical complications, including subclinical leaflet thrombosis characterized by Hypoattenuated Leaflet Thickening (HALT). A rigorous analysis of TAVR device thrombogenicity considering anatomical variations is essential for estimating this risk. Clinicians use the Sinotubular Junction (STJ) diameter for TAVR sizing, but there is a paucity of research on its influence on TAVR devices thrombogenicity. A Medtronic Evolut® TAVR device was deployed in three patient models with varying STJ diameters (26, 30, and 34mm) to evaluate its impact on post-deployment hemodynamics and thrombogenicity, employing a novel computational framework combining prosthesis deployment and fluid-structure interaction analysis. The 30mm STJ patient case exhibited the best hemodynamic performance: 5.94mmHg mean transvalvular pressure gradient (TPG), 2.64 cm2 mean geometric orifice area (GOA), and the lowest mean residence time (TR)-indicating a reduced thrombogenic risk; 26mm STJ exhibited a 10 % reduction in GOA and a 35% increase in mean TPG compared to the 30mm STJ; 34mm STJ depicted hemodynamics comparable to the 30mm STJ, but with a 6% increase in TR and elevated platelet stress accumulation. A smaller STJ size impairs adequate expansion of the TAVR stent, which may lead to suboptimal hemodynamic performance. Conversely, a larger STJ size marginally enhances the hemodynamic performance but increases the risk of TAVR leaflet thrombosis. Such analysis can aid pre-procedural planning and minimize the risk of TAVR leaflet thrombosis.
